#UntamedStyle - Zodiac Style

This month my #UntamedStyle sisters and I are back with a fun theme.  We are all so different and diverse, yet have similar sensibilities.  What better way to show our style and personality than with an outfit inspired by our Zodiac sign.  I am not sure how many of you really know about your sign and what it means. Not everyone is into astrological signs and how they relate to who you are and your personality.  I have always been fascinated by astrology and zodiac signs, it helps me understand who I am, but also the people around me. So next time someone ask you "What's your sign"  don't think of it as just some cheesy pick up line. They may be genuinely interested in getting to know you and understand what makes you tic....I know I am!

So after doing some research on my sign (Taurus) and how my style is influenced by the characteristic of this sign, I found much of it to be true and not just fluff!

Here is the basic on Taurus Style:

  • Gentle and affectionate, the earthly sign of Taurus is likely to stick with pieces that are traditional classics.
  • Taurus fashion is all about texture. Only the finest fabrics will do, comfort is key to this senses-driven sign.
  • The Taurus fashion rule number one has to be: incorporate flowers where you can.
  • Taurus appreciates classic looks and sensual fabrics, generally conservative.
  • The Taurus body part is the thorax, throat, neck – you name it, the trunk is Taurus!
So what does this all mean?  Being a Taurus I am partial to more classic styles, comfort is key and texture does come into play.  It it doesn't feel right to me, no matter how good it looks I won't wear it!  I have also always been attracted to floral prints.  Looking at my closet I realized, I have tons of floral prints in dresses, shirts, pants and even shoes!  I also lean more towards natural fabrics and neutral colors.  I have always said I am a hippie at heart, loving bohemian style, but also adding a bit of edge.  I can't be a bull with out being a little bit of bad ass!  My closet is also full of scarves and I am always looking to buy more...well now I know why.  I love a good scarf and always feel comfortable and secure having one.  In the cooler months I make sure to always have a pashmina or some kind of scarf in my bag.  Its such an easy way to elevate and outfit and look stylish.  Being a Taurus is about loving life's little luxuries.  I some how manage to live a very "rich" life on a small budget, which what this blog is all about.  Like the saying goes "it only looks expensive"!  So there you have it a little insight into how my style is influenced by my astrological sign. You probably will not see me with anything too trendy, always wearing similar silhouettes and having a comfy and casual style. I am a creature of habit and stubborn at times, but I know what I like!

I Love Being A Taurus!

So next time you're picking out an outfit or wondering where you taste in fashion comes from, it may be influenced by your sign.  Here is a good website I found that has lots of good info on fashion and signs Star Sign Style.

Here's an outfit I put together inspired by Taurus. I took all or most of the elements of my sign, according to my research. Incorporating flowers, comfort, natural fabric and touch of boho style.

Dove #LoveYourCurls with Quench Absolute Collection

Is your hair naturally curly?
Are those curls real?
Where do you get your hair done?
Would you sell your hair to make wigs?

The questions go on and on about my hair.  I've been asked so many questions in regards to my hair. People want to touch it, they want to know how I get it so curly and how can they get the same results! Well let's set the record straight about my curls!  YES, they are 100% natural and all mine.

Funny thing about my curls, growing up as a curly I wasn't always excited about the hair I was blessed with. My mother is not a curly, my dad is the one with the curls.  My mom didn't always know how to care or deal with my hair, since she has stick straight hair.  She did the best she could, with out having any special products for my kind of hair.  My mom used a brush and water...that is all!  She didn't even know about detanglers, which I needed desperately!  My hair was always neatly combed in braids or pig tails, never loose and free.   I got teased a bit about my hair, since I was one of the few kids to have such curly hair in school. One year I made my mom cut it all off, after having waist long hair for many years.  I didn't know the shorter my hair the curlier it would get.  I was devastated to see it so short, so curly and I basically had a little Afro.   It wasn't always fun and many nights I wished and prayed for straight hair.  My sister's hair is also more on the straight side with just a slight wave, but wouldn't be considered curly.   It was difficult for me to understand why I was different and didn't have hair like my mom and sister.  So many years were spent trying to keep my curls under control and tamed.  Growing up we didn't have any special products for curls...nothing seemed to work just right.  My brother and I even made our own "hair gel" out of gelatin. Crazy!  I slicked it back, put it in a bun, braided and hid my curls as much as possible.

Now I am much more comfortable and happy about my curls. Now I know how to care for my curls and what products work best.  Thanks to brands like Dove who make special products which make my curls look fabulous!  I recently was able to try the New Dove Quench Absolute hair care line for curls. Having the right kind of products for curly hair has made a significant difference, in not only the look of my hair, but also the way I feel about my curls.  My curls are much more bouncy and shiny after using Dove Quench Absolute system.  It leaves my hair moisturized, soft and manageable.  Did I mention it also smells great, which is a bonus to loving your curls.  Now I am proud and happy when people compliment my curls.  A day doesn't go by without people (mostly older ladies) telling me I have beautiful hair and so lucky to have curls.

Here is products I've been using from Quench Absolute Collection:

  • Quench Absolute Ultra Nourishing Shampoo
  • Quench Absolute Ultra Nourishing Conditioner
  • Quench Absolute Intensive Restoration Mask
  • Quench Absolute Supreme CrΓ¨me Serum
After just a few uses of NEW Dove Hair Quench Absolute my curls look healthier and feel great. These products provide 4X more defined, natural curls. The three part system nourishes hair. The entire line has really made a difference in the overall appearance of my curls.  The formulas, infused with protein, nutrients and Buriti Oil, provide a nourished, smooth finish. My favorite has been the Quench Absolute Intensive Restoration Mask, which has helped with the dryness and dullness. Just like having the right outfit, having the right hair-care can make you feel more confident as well.

It has taken me many years to love and accept my curls.  I have never really liked to straighten, blow dry or flat iron my curls. Maybe deep down inside I knew these curls made me unique and special. That is how people know me and remember me, I'm the girl with the curls!

Dove wants to help all women and girls love their curls.  Did you know that women and girls with curly hair tend to feel less confident.  Only 4 in 10 little girls with curly hair think their hair is beautiful.  Only 10% of women in the U.S. with curly hair feel proud of their hair.  All women and girls should be proud and love their hair. Dove Hair launched the #LoveYourCurls campaign to encourage women to celebrate their curls and inspire future generations to do the same.

Dove has a really cute book, which is a poetic tribute to curly hair.  A love of curls for everyone to be inspired and embrace their uniqueness. Real stories from real women inspired the poems in the book.  It's a beautiful and touching book, written by best-selling author, Taiye Selasi and illustrated by Annick Poirier.  It represents and inspired by curlies of all ages, because its never to late or early to start loving your curls!

You download [and share] a copy of the book to inspire the curly girls in your life. It's easy to create a personalized e-book with a custom dedication and illustration for a curly cutie in your life. Just Visit Dove.com/LoveYourCurls to download the free e-book.  You will love it for your self or make a curly girl feel special.  I wished this book was available when I was a kid.  It would have made a big difference on how I felt about my curls.

L'Oreal Paris Event: Diane Keaton Wears It Everyday, Do You?

Did you know May is Melanoma Awareness Month!  I had no idea, well I've known about Melanoma, cancer of the skin but didn't know there was a month dedicated to awareness.  Earlier this month I was invited by L'Oreal Paris to an event in Beverly Hills about Melanoma Awareness and protecting your skin.  A panel spoke about their own personal stories with skin cancer, prevention and awareness about this disease.

Ontario Mills Outlet Shopping - Best Deals In Town

"This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Ontario Mills.
However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own."

May is a great shopping month, its all starts with my birthday, then Mother's day, graduations and ends with Memorial Day.  If you live in Southern California, then I am sure you are familiar with Ontario Mills, in Ontario, CA one of the biggest and best outlet malls, just a 38 miles from Downtown LA.  No more driving for hours or out of the state for true savings and outlet shopping. I remember when the Mills first opened in 1996, it was the biggest retail location I have ever been too. I've seen it grow and changed through out the years.  It has all my favorite stores, tons of places to eat and entertainment options as well. I was there right before Mother's Day and found tons of great deals.  My mom is out of the country so I saved the gift shopping until she returns.  I did mange to find a few goodies for my self!

Plus Size Universe: Two Piece Sets

Do you remember when the idea of wearing a matching top and skirt in the same print was fashion suicide? OK I know sounds dramatic, but fashion can be funny and tricky. Like Heidi Klum says on Project Runway "In fashion one day you're in and the next you're out". Mixing patterns is so last year, in 2015 is all about two piece sets. This style seems to be really popular at the moment, matching tops and bottoms. Kerry Washington is one of the most recent celebs to be seen on the red carpet with this look. Thank goodness fashion has grown and evolved for plus size women, we can wear similar looks like the ones seen on celebs. This new trend has actually grown on me, its very versatile and easy to wear. Mix and match the top and the skirt, you have endless outfit possibilities. I am all about easy stylish outfits.

Here's my version of Kerry Washington's two piece look for Plus Size Universe.
eloquii, two piece dress, twin sets, timo weiland, kerry washington, plus size fashion, plus size universe, style, steal her style, get the look

Kerry is wearing a two piece dress from designer Timo Weiland in an abstract floral print.  Her look is some what simple, but the matching set is chic and modern.  The look is from the RTW Fall 2015 Collection, the top is about $195 and skirt about $225 for total of $420.  I couldn't find the exact one online, because it may not be available to us normal folks yet, but similar look from same designer found here.   The plus size universe version is from Eloquii, they have a few two piece sets available on their website, but this was my fave. The Plus Size Universe version is just as nice and has graphic design as well, the top is $75 and the skirt is $80, for a total of $155 for entire look. But you're in luck, I checked the Eloquii website and they are having a nice sale right now.  You get 50% off one item, then 30% off any additional items using code STYLE50.  Combine the two and you can get a good deal on the set for about $93, instead of $155! You know I like to bargain shop, so when ever I see these great deals I have to share with my readers!!

What do you think about this new trend?  Would you wear a matching two piece set?

Hope you enjoy this weeks Plus Size Universe feature. Want me to find a plus size version of an outfit for you? Email me and I can help you find your Plus Size Universe. Leave  a comment with your thoughts on this outfit. Also follow me on Instagram for more of my style finds.

I'm 20 with 20 Years Experience

Today is my birthday! Yup, it's the big 4-0, or as I like to call it the 20:20!  I'm officially joining the #40PlusStyle club.  When I first started blogging 6 yrs ago, I quickly realized fashion blogging was a young persons game. I was over 30 and every blogger I knew was significantly younger.  Most fashion bloggers were and are early to late 20s, another set in their 30s, but I didn't know any who we're near 40 or older.  Slowing I started to meet other fashion bloggers who were my age and recently discovered an entire group of fashion bloggers who are 40+.  Hello have you met the ladies of Advanced Style! There are a lot more older fashion bloggers than I even imagined and I am delighted to join them.  I've been thinking a lot about turning 40, how I would feel, would I be sad or depressed? When I turned 30, it was a wonderful feeling, finally felt like a real adult and starting a new stage in life. 40 seemed so far away and so old!  Now here I am 10 years later and guess what!  I feel better than ever! OK I'm not going to lie, there are days I wake up a little achy, cranky and find a new wrinkle or gray hair.  But I've come to realize 40 is NOT old. It's not the end of world to turn 40, it's just the beginning!  I've learned many life lessons in my 40 yrs and I am so grateful and thankful for them all.

Today I want to share a few of those lessons I've learned and helped me along the way.

1) Trust your instincts, they are usually right. I'm sure you heard of the saying "women's intuition" well it's same thing as your instinct. We all have them and something in our gut tells us if it's a good or bad situation.  As you grow older you learn to listen to those instincts and let them guide you.  Sometimes we don't listen and go the opposite route, but soon enough you will learn those gut feelings mean something.  Trust yourself to know you are making the right decision in whatever you do. Listen to  your heart and it will guide you down the right path.

2) Always believe in yourself!  This one is a hard one for many people. It's taken me almost 40 years to believe in my self, I've had many years of self doubt. Growing up I wasn't the most confident and didn't feel I deserved many things.  I didn't feel I was good enough and therefore neither did others.  It all begins with YOU!  If you don't believe in yourself and abilities no one else will.  You know what you capable of so be confident in who you are and everything else will fall into palace. It takes time, I am still learning to be more confident and believe in my self.  It doesn't happen over night, but you just have to keep believing you are fabulous just the way you are!

3) Love yourself no matter what anyone else says or thinks about you!  The only opinion that matters is your own.  We all have people in our lives who judge and criticize us, but those opinions don't matter. Those negative voices mean nothing if you love and believe in yourself.  No one knows you better or will love you like you do! So always be kind and caring to yourself, love yourself because you have many years to go.

4) Age is really just a number.  Blogging has emphasized this lesson.  Your age is just a number and it only represents how many birthdays you've had.  Your age does not represent how you should live or feel about your self.  Your age is not a limit on what you can do or hold you back from pursuing your dreams.  Don't let any one tell you are too old to do anything, or wear anything.   I've learned this lesson best from Advanced Style, it's one of my favorite blogs and feel inspired by all the beautiful older stylish people being featured. I sometimes get down about my age and think why! Why I am letting a number rule how I feel, act or dress.  I am not sure how a 40 yr old women should feel, act or dress, but I will continue to just be me.

5) Be Nice and Kind...this one is the most important of all.  It doesn't take much to be nice or kind and this can go a long way.  As a blogger I have met many wonderful people, but sadly I have also met some not so nice people.  There is no need to be mean, or look down on people.  No matter who they are, where they come from or what they do, be nice.  You never know who that person is, a simple smile or hello can make the difference.  I try to be nice, say hello, please and thank you to everyone.  I am not perfect, we all have bad days.  I am sure there has been a day when I may have come across as mean or rude.  But I know those days are few and far compared to the kindness I have given.  It all comes down to treating other how you would like to be treated.  I live by this and its helped me, because some one, some where will remember me for being nice and kind. That is exactly how I want to be remembered.

OK those are just a few of the lessons learned, I hope you too can learn and benefit from them.   Aging is not a bad thing and we all should embrace it with open arms.  Getting older is happening to us all, we can choose to accept it and make the best of if or fight it and struggle.   I personally will chose to embrace and accept it, getting older is a blessing and one day I will have many great stories to tell my children and grand children.  Can you imagine 20, 30 even 40 yrs from now looking back at this blog and everything I have accomplished! Wow that will be a great way to share my story.

So today all I want is for you to think about your life lessons and what they have taught you.  If you want to make this birthday girl even happier, go follow me on Instagram to help me reach my goal of 1500! :)
